Personal Finance – Three things to Do if You're a Student and You're Also Broke
With the increasing cost of education, the life of a student is never easy. With meager support from parents or scholarship plans, a student often has to find some other means to get necessary funding. But what happens when it seem like it simply isn’t enough? Here is a lit of three things that a broke student can do to fix his dilemma.
The first thing you can do is to track your spending. Sometimes, your problem is not the lack of money. Instead, it’s how you spend it. Try to be more financially responsible with your budgetary allowance.
For example, if you order pizza too often, why don’t you try to actually do the grocery shopping yourself and learn how to cook? This lets you have more nutritious at a very small fraction of the cost. You can also lessen your expenses by going out less often. These activities, although fun, contribute relatively little towards your current situation.
The second thing that you can do, just in case the first one didn’t work, is to get a part-time job. Preferably, find a position as an assistant in your school so that the work hours can be more flexible. However, if such a position is unavailable, talk with your prospective employer about your special situation so that you will know if he can adjust your schedule for you.
This is a very good option. However, many people drop out of college because of this. Since this may be their first time to actually earn money, they get so excited about their newfound financial freedom that they forget why they got the job in the first place.
The third thing that you can do is to apply for a student loan. Take this route ONLY when the first two options failed. Student loans are usually charged much lower interest rates because of government incentives. However, a loan is still a loan, and it has to be repaid in full in the near future.
A student loan can easily fly up to more than USD 100,000 if the credit agency will shoulder all your education expenses. While having a loan is very convenient, a lot of people find themselves in a gigantic financial quagmire as soon as they graduate, as it is only then that they realize that it would take them forever to repay it.
Austerity, employment, credit – these are the top three things that a broke student can do, and it is really up to you to decide which solution best fits you.
